Creating Something Magical

Designing this production had a simple concept.

A classical fairytale feel.

Taking the traditional flown-cloth set elements and helping them to carry the traditional theatrical magic of the scene into the theatre.

This was complemented with heavy elements of side-light to help make the bodies of the dancers pop onstage.

Tight on Time

The design for this two-act ballet was put together within a very tight time frame. The period from the initial introduction into the team and the final execution of the design was short considering the requirements of the design and multiple flown elements.

Furthermore, the rig needed to remain as the venue standard (with a couple of minor exceptions).

Classic Concepts

Due to both the nature of the show and the limited resources and time, the methodology of the design was very traditional in regards to its lighting design ethos. I took this decision to ensure a design could be produced without the need for additional lighting equipment, but also to stay true to both the performance style and methodology of the ballet company.
